Lawrence Berkeley National Lab’s (LBNL) Engineering Division has an opening for a Quality Engineer Lead to join the team.
This position will support medium to large size projects to develop and review work instruction and verification/validation plans, set-up production lines, and support vendor interaction.
This role will require close interaction with internal and external manufacturers and the ability to build and maintain strategic business relationships while focusing on the macro perspective regarding technical needs and logistics details of projects as it relates to quality assurance and quality control. Be responsible for defining and implementing a project specific Quality Assurance plan.
A typical project may include the following types of equipment: particle accelerators, plasmas, and/or charged particle systems; optics: charged particle and/or x-ray; x- ray (synchrotron/FEL) beamline design; magnetic systems: normal conducting, superconducting, and/or permanent magnet; cryogenic systems; vacuum systems.
What You Will Do:
Responsible for all quality assurance aspects of a project and provide sound engineering judgment and support in developing, implementing, and overseeing quality engineering processes and workflow.
Demonstrates good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions.
Work with a diverse team of scientists, engineers, technicians, collaborators and vendors to develop project specific QA workflows and documentation requirements.
Responsibilities include procurement management, technical oversight of procurements as related to quality assurance, or manufacturing engineering support.
Position may require engineering design and analysis as part of the quality assurance activities.
What is Required (Level 3):
Typically requires a minimum of 5 years of related experience in technical quality assurance with a Bachelor’s degree; or 3 years and a Master’s degree or equivalent work experience in technical quality assurance.
Seasoned technical background with the ability to work with engineering, manufacturing and suppliers on specialized engineering topics, including issues and corrective actions identified in design and production phases.
Experience in implementing technical quality assurance and hands-on experience in manufacturing plants and in scientific projects.
Experienced in quality standard development and cross-functional team management.
Networks with senior internal and external personnel in their own area of expertise including manufacturing, and quality control.
Serve as a resource and coordinator for specific engineering projects for manufacturing procurements, onsite manufacturing, shipping/receiving, and external technical subcontractors.
Help establish performance criteria and specifications for manufacturing, assembly, and testing.
Help develop project scope and estimate related logistics (time/cost estimates, assembly/installation timelines).
Provide technical oversight to procurement. (E.g., technical aspects of drawings, understanding of technical issues; advice on vendor qualifications, technical details of contract or proposal verbiage).
Explore and validate cost-effective and timely solutions for complex and often technically challenging projects.
Analyze technical data, designs, preliminary specifications, manufacturing limitations, supplier facilities, and availability of parts and equipment.
Investigate potential vendors and make recommendations; be aware of and communicate vendor discrepancies and parts/equipment issues.
Assist projects in establishing appropriate QA/QC plans for specific scientific components or production lines.
Facilitate material inspection, substitution, standardization, rework, salvage, utilization, and economical procurement of parts and equipment.
Write specifications for technically complex or challenging procurements; including the gathering and organization of technical details and requirements.
Additional Requirements for Quality Engineer (Level 4):
Typically requires a minimum of 8 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 6 years and a Master’s degree; or equivalent experience.
Determines methods and procedures on new assignments.
Coordinate and supervise activities of other personnel.
Desired Qualifications:
Master degree preferred.
Professional Quality Assurance Certification (ASQ or similar).
Salary:
The full salary range of the Quality Engineer (Level 3) position is between $9,409 to $15,876 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $10,585 to $12,937 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
The full salary range of the Quality Engineer (Level 4) position is between $11,418 to $19,268 per month and is expected to pay between a targeted range of $12,846 to $15,699 per month depending upon the candidate’s skills, knowledge, and abilities, including education, certifications, and years of experience.
Notes:
This is a full-time 2 year, term appointment with the possibility of extension or conversion to Career appointment based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs.

This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule - a combination of teleworking and performing work on site at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Work schedules are dependent on business needs. Individuals working a hybrid schedule must reside within 150 miles of Berkeley Lab.
