About Shawano Municipal Utilities
The City of Shawano is an attractive, growing community of approximately 10,000 year-round residents and is the county seat of Shawano County. Shawano is located just 30 miles northwest of Green Bay and 40 miles north of Appleton. This allows residents an exceptional regional access to urban opportunities. Located on the Wolf River, the city offers quick access to 6,000 acre Shawano Lake just minutes from downtown Shawano. The City also offers over 300 acres of public parks.
The city has become a major tourist hub due to wonderful outdoor opportunities like fishing, hunting, camping and seasonal cottages. The summer season brings with it a boom of activity and the seasonal population fills the city with visitors looking for unique and charming shops, restaurants and entertainment opportunities. The City is also experiencing a boom in new businesses in the last few years.
The City is actively involved in economic development initiatives with 8 TIF districts and industrial/business parks and a well-established downtown. In 2017 it was ranked as the 10th best site to start a business in Wisconsin. The City prides itself on its schools, parks, affordable housing, community part...icipation, stable leadership, and all-round quality of life. The City of Shawano offers 26 parks, a public library shared with Shawano County and a strong economic development program. The city operates with a mayor, council, and administrator form of government that includes a part-time mayor and six alderpersons. The administrator is responsible for carrying out policy directives from the elected body.
