The College of Engineering and Computing at the University of South Carolina seeks nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Department offers the B.S., M.S., M.E. and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. The department also offers the M.S. and Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering. The department conducts research and supports the Biomedical Engineering program. The department has 33 full-time faculty, an undergraduate enrollment of over 900 students, a graduate enrollment of over 200 students, and over $10.8 million in research expenditures in the most recent fiscal year. The department is home to six endowed chairs as well as the McNAIR Aerospace Research Center. The next department chair will have the opportunity to grow strategic areas of research, and oversee innovation and modernization of curricula, as well as continuing to grow the aerospace and nuclear engineering programs.
The department chair is responsible for administration of all functions relating to the teaching, research, and service mission of the department. These functions include but are not limited to: maintaining ABET accreditation of undergraduate programs; modernization of undergraduate and graduate curricula, mentoring and retention of students and faculty; supervision of departmental staff; hiring, review, reappointment, and promotion of faculty; fiscal responsibility; liaison with the Dean of the College and other university administrators; overall compliance with University policies and procedures; and growth and development of the research portfolio and graduate student body.
Qualified applicants are expected to have both outstanding leadership and administrative skills in order to enhance the educational and research missions of the department. Applicants should have a strong record of research and teaching performance, and credentials (including an earned PhD in mechanical, aerospace, or nuclear engineering, or a related field) commensurate with appointment as a full professor with tenure in the Department.
