The Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration (SME) is looking for experienced, freelance editors and proofreaders for their book-publishing program.
Editing technical books for organization, content, grammar, punctuation, accuracy, consistency, and style. Developmental/substantive editing is sometimes required.
Reviewing/editing figures, charts, diagrams, and tables and ensuring they fit with corresponding text.
Checking, verifying, and formatting references.
Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and Adobe Acrobat.
Editing onscreen with Microsoft Word using tracking features, “Styles,” and templates as required.
Knowledge of equations and ability to use MS Word’s equation editor.
Generating and/or reviewing copyright logs and obtaining permissions to use materials, including the ability to help author with these items, as necessary.
Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and ability to work with various style guides.
Working with authors directly via email.
Ability to meet deadlines.
Working from your location. Therefore, you must possess your own equipment, including a computer.
5 years of professional editing experience
Degree in English, journalism, or related field
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to follow instructions and to work under limited supervision
Organization skills, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail
Ability to generate and/or follow a style sheet/guide
Ability to juggle multiple projects
Familiarity with the mining industry is a plus.
Project management experience is a plus
