This position will provide technical support for research studies conducted by the Cardiovascular and Vision Laboratory (CVL) at NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The CVL is a component of the Biomedical Research and Environmental Sciences Division, which implements the science objectives of the life sciences research laboratories at the Johnson Space Center. The primary function of the incumbent will be to collect, analyze, and manage research and medical data in support of research activities conducted in the CVL.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan; must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company’s safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company • Responsible for completing all assigned training • Perform work that involves conventional engineering practices. • Application of engineering principles and practice of related specialties. • Collect, reduce, collate, analyze, and archive operational, flight, flight analog, and ground data. • Analyze experimental data and recommend modifications to analysis procedures and analytical methods; develop and modify software for data reduction and analysis. • Operate specialized equipment used in tests on human subjects. • Operate data acquisition systems during hardware verification, science verification, and actual data acquisition from human subjects. • Prepare and update appropriate documentation of software and hardware development activities. • Evaluate software and hardware for potential acquisition. • Assist in the preparation of human research protocols, technical reports, presentations, and manuscripts. • Participate in test readiness reviews and meetings related to the development and implementation of human research protocols, detailed test plans, etc. • Contribute to the formulation and documentation of standard procedures in the laboratory.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: • Bachelor’s Degree plus 5+ years of experience; or Master’s Degree plus 0-2 years of experience; or equivalent experience in biomedical, electrical, or mechanical engineering, or a closely allied field. The incumbent must be skilled in the evaluation and integration of biomedical imaging instrumentation intended for use with human subjects. The incumbent must be able to independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria and use judgment to make decisions to provide engineering solutions to problems. Knowledge of human physiology to understand biomedical experiments designed to characterize the human adaptive response to space flight and space flight analogs is also a requirement. Incumbent must have the ability to work effectively both in small teams and independently; and work effectively in a multidisciplinary setting and where there are frequently divergent or competing goals for the project implementation and outcome. Incumbent must have the flexibility to balance work from multiple projects.
SKILLS/TRAINING REQUIRED: • Advanced PC Skills in Microsoft Office products are required. The incumbent is expected to participate as a member of a research team working closely with principal investigators, astronauts, subjects, support scientists, and other engineers. Communication skills must be excellent. The incumbent must develop a thorough knowledge of NASA's and KBRwyle's policies and procedures governing the use of human test subjects. Prior experience with Matlab, data management software, and data acquisition systems (e.g., PowerLab, BioPac, Notocord) is required.
DESIRED: • Previous experience with Python and Matlab toolkits, such as Signal Processing Toolkit and Image Processing Toolkit is desired. Technical skills associated with image analysis, including ultrasound (cardiac and vascular), MRI (eye and brain), and/or optical coherence tomography (eye), is a plus.
