Salary Range: $74,142.38 with step increases to $93,124.98

Nature of Work This is advanced engineering and supervisory work in the operation of a Public Works facility or in the study, design, and construction of complex Public Works Department projects. Work involves supervising and participating in the design, planning, and scheduling of projects, the inspection of materials and workmanship, and the management of the projects, including overseeing the work of contractors and consultants. It also involves the performance of special studies and projects, writing reports of findings, the preparation of environmental impact statements, meeting with individuals and groups to discuss Public Works issues, assisting in budget preparations, coordinating civic events, and issuing construction permits. An employee in this classification exercises considerable independence in the performance of duties, oversees the work of a number of subordinates, and receives general guidance from a superior.

Civil/Environmental Design. Prepare sanitary and storm sewer design packages; hydraulic and hydrologic modeling experience; experience with combined sewer programs in an urban area; management of civil and environmental design projects; coordinates the preparation of, or develops, engineering plans and specifications, coordinates required advertising for bids, reviews construction bids and makes necessary recommendations based on lowest and best bids, competency of vendors and consultants, and the selection criteria. Transportation Design. Prepare and manage transportation design projects; develop projects that federal-aid and demonstrate experience developing NEPA documents; demonstrate experience as a NEPA Responsible Charge or the ability to obtain that recognition; coordinates the preparation of, or develops, engineering plans and specifications, coordinates required advertising for bids, reviews construction bids and makes necessary recommendations based on lowest and best bids, competency of vendors and consultants, and the selection criteria. Private Plans Review. Reviews private project development plans for compliance with codes, regulations, and standards, adequacy of applications for permits and compliance with approved plans; coordinates and/or undertakes the development or update of all plans involving municipal infrastructure; review of hydraulic and hydrologic modeling and incorporation into to design elements and drainage reports; responds to inquiries relative to engineering policies and procedures on specific projects and other information; assists in the evaluation of transportation and traffic impacts of development proposals, permits, rezones, plats, etc.
