Job AnnouncementThe Building Division of Fairfax County is recruiting for two Building Plans Examiner (Engineer III) positions. Duties include, but not limited to:
Reviews construction plans for new commercial construction and alterations to existing buildings and structures for compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC) and county policies.
Verifies compliance with code requirements including life-safety, accessibility, and structural design using analytical skills, engineering principles, and calculations.
Informs applicant of code deficiencies in writing and in person.
Meets with contractors, developers, builders, engineers, homeowners, citizens, and other governmental agencies to explain requirements of code and county policies.
Assists field inspectors in the interpretation of field conditions and whether the construction complies with code requirements.
Conducts training in technical, legal, and administrative aspects of the code and county policies.
Performs field inspections on an as need basis to support the division.
Complies with county, agency and job specific training requirements, including but not limited to technical, legal, administrative, emergency management, and safety-related courses.
Complies with established LDS's safety program and guidelines.
Under the supervision of the Deputy Director of the Building Division.
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Engineer II (Grade S24, $57,165 - $95,276)
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education, training and experience equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university accredited by the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technologies with a bachelor's degree in the appropriate engineering or architectural field; and four years of progressively responsible professional experience in the appropriate engineering field.

A degree in civil or structural engineering, architecture, or construction management.
Experience in commercial plan review or design with the application of building code.
Professional Engineer or Registered Architect license.
Clear and concise oral and written communication skills
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
A valid driver's license is required.
Obtain a Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development (VDHCD) certification as Commercial Building Plans Examiner within 18 months of appointment.
Obtain a VDHCD Commercial Building Inspector with 36 month of appointment.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee is required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Ability to operate key-board driven equipment and use large platform monitors to review plans. Sufficient mobility to perform on-site building inspections. Ability to lift plans up to pounds with or without assistance. Ability to perform sedentary tasks. Duties are performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
