The mission of the Public Works Department is to operate, maintain and improve the City of San Mateo’s infrastructure. The Public Works Department is comprised of the Engineering and Facilities Services Divisions, and the Environmental Services Division. Each division is led by a Deputy Director reporting to the Director of Public Works. The Department is responsible for the City’s capital projects and infrastructure including streets, streetlights, traffic signals, publicly owned parking lots and garages, sewer and storm conveyance systems, wastewater treatment plant, pump stations, a lagoon, dams and levees.

Each manager and supervisor is responsible for ensuring the best possible performance of each employee and the accomplishment of the Department’s collective goals and work plans. The Engineering Technician vacancy we currently have is in the Private Development group. While the technician may perform other duties as assigned, including supporting the Capital Improvement Program, the primary role will be plan checking for private developments in the City.
What You’ll Do
Locate utilities, easements, property lines and other information on plans.
Prepare topographical plan and profile maps of property and pertinent features from survey notes and legal descriptions.
Use Auto CAD and prepare miscellaneous illustrative materials such as charts and graphs.
Answer questions and provide information to the public concerning engineering activities.
Issue permits, accept permit fees over the counter, and answer questions related to maintenance projects as applicable.
Inspect streets, sidewalks, sewers, drains and other public areas for maintenance needs.
Prepare cost estimates of labor, materials equipment necessary for maintenance projects and assist in developing working schedules.
Prepare and maintain production and related records regarding maintenance activities.
Maintain various technical files and departmental logs.
Update underground utility maps using AutoCAD and work with engineering staff to ensure as-built data is received and entered.
Perform private development plan checking and encroachment permit drawing reviews.
Who You Are
You read figures quickly and accurately and perform complex engineering and mathematic calculations with speed and accuracy.
You perform difficult engineering drafting work. You reduce, interpret and apply field notes in performance of drafting duties.
You make accurate computations of material quantities and production measures.
You communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
What You Bring
Engineering Technician I -
Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade, supplemented by college level courses in mathematics and drafting.
One year of experience in technical field and/or office engineering work.
Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid California driver's license.
Engineering Technician II –
In addition to the qualifications for Engineering Technician I -
One year of experience performing duties comparable to those of an Engineering Technician I in the City of San Mateo
Bonus Points (highly desirable)
Possession of an Engineering-in-Training (E.I.T) certificate.
A Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in civil or structural engineering or architecture.
One to two years’ experience performing plan check reviews.
ADA Special Requirement: Essential duties require the following physical abilities and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, climb, and lift 25 pounds; exposure to extreme noise, outdoors, chemicals, dust and mechanical hazards.
