Electrical Engineer - Facility Design and Installation

We have an opening for an experienced Electrical Engineer to support facility design and installation projects within the National Ignition Facility and Photon Sciences Directorate (NIF&PS). NIF, which houses the world's highest energy pulsed laser system, provides the scientific community with an unprecedented capability for studying materials at extreme pressures, temperatures, and densities and it is supported by a wide variety of support facilities. You will be responsible for providing technical expertise for new electrical and facility systems to build out new or reconfigured lab and other facility spaces as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades to existing systems. You will have opportunities to work on the entire lifecycle of electrical and facility systems. This position is in the Laser Systems Engineering and Operations (LSEO) Division, within the Engineering Directorate.
This position will be filled at either the TSS.2 or TSS.3 level depending on your qualifications. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if you are selected at the higher level.
Essential Duties - Perform electrical engineering facility design and installation support for new facility systems as well as maintenance, operations, repairs, and upgrades of existing systems. - Develop and implement maintenance programs as well as troubleshoot equipment issues for electrical systems in 24/7 operational facilities. - Perform electrical calculations, including arc flash, breaker coordination, energy/power balance, system and line sizing, and control system optimization. - Design system enhancements to increase reliability and maintainability. - Design, install, and test installations of standby power, motor starters, VFDs, and motor control centers. - Perform other duties as assigned. In Addition at the TSS.3 Level - Independently develop designs of electrical and facility systems. - Apply system engineering processes to define requirements and manage risk. - Lead formal and informal design reviews.
Qualifications - Bachelor's degree (BS) in Electrical Engineering or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience. - Licensed Electrical Engineer in California or equivalent license. - Comprehensive knowledge and experience with electrical and facility system design and performance, including power distribution, motor control, and safety systems. - Experience with procedures, work control, and configuration management. - Experience working effectively in a dynamic and multidisciplinary environment, which includes working with scientists, engineers, technicians, and designers. - Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment and present and explain technical information. In Addition at the TSS.3 Level - Advanced knowledge and significant experience with electrical and facility systems, including working knowledge of standards and applicable building codes. - Advanced knowledge and significant experience with control systems, such as Industrial Controls or HVAC controls. - Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to lead technical discussions in a team environment.
Desired Qualifications - Maintenance or reliability professional certification. - Experience with electrical power distribution systems. - Experience with the DDC or Industrial Controls and development environment or similar package; experience with cleanroom operations.
Pre-Employment Drug Test: External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
Security Clearance: This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.
